In a world that often glorifies selflessness, I found myself caught in the alluring web of people-pleasing. For years, I prioritized the needs and expectations of others above my own, striving to gain approval and avoid conflict. However, this journey has not only been about distinguishing my own voice from the chorus of others but also about learning a profound truth: I am deserving of my own kindness and care.

The Need for Approval

Reflecting on my early experiences, I realize that my tendency to please others took root in childhood. Growing up, I learned that my worth was often measured by my ability to make others happy. Whether it was overextending myself for friends, family, or colleagues, I felt a sense of fulfillment in being the person everyone could rely on. Yet, behind this facade of cheerfulness, I began to feel an unsettling emptiness — a persistent void borne from neglecting my own needs.

The awakening came gradually, stemming from moments of exhaustion and frustration. I recall an incident when a friend canceled plans at the last minute, and I found myself feeling inexplicably devastated.
